LWOW 2020: Applications now open [Deadline: Nov. 29/19]

LWOW 2020: Recruitment + Applications

The Hennick Centre is proud, for the SEVENTH year running, to offer upper year Osgoode-Schulich students the OPPORTUNITY to participate in LawWithoutWalls, a groundbreaking international academic program designed by the University of Miami School of Law, in their 10th anniversary year!!!

LWOW brings together 100 students and faculty from 30 Law and Business Schools around the world, including Harvard Law, Stanford Law, Wharton, University of Sydney, University College London, IE Business School, and Peking University School of Transnational Law. With guidance from leading academic, lawyer and entrepreneur mentors, teams of students conduct guided, collaborative research to identify a problem related to law, business, and technology and develop a practicable solution (including prototype and business plan). Students participate in the for-credit LWOW Sprint or LWOW Xed programs during the 2020 Winter Term.

Important Details:

  • Eligibility: upper year students, 2L or higher
  • JD/MBAs can only participate during the years they are enrolled in Osgoode, not Schulich.
  • The program is being offered as a 3 credit independent study course supervised by Prof. Ed Waitzer – Co-Director JD/MBA Program, and Director of the Hennick Centre or another member of the Faculty as agreed upon, grade received decided by Osgoode Faculty supervisor, not LWOW.
  • The student’s participation registration fee in the program is funded by the Hennick Centre.
  • LWOW Sprint: 2 day in-person experiential learning “weekender” focused on innovation, collaboration, and transformation.
    • LWOW Sprint is designed to match the demanding legal marketplace today which often requires extraordinary talented multi-disciplinary teams to be pulled together quickly to work collaboratively on urgent matters. As such, the LWOW Sprint is a team based, multi-disciplinary, inclusive, cross-generational experience. Over the course of 2 intense, high energy days, participants hack to solve a real business-of-law-problem assigned to them by a sponsoring law firm, legal department, or law company. In addition to creating and presenting the foundation of a practicable solution, participants learn design thinking principles and new ways of communicating, leading, and approaching collaboration and culture change that can be leveraged at work. The intensive LWOW Sprint mirrors real life sprints to meet client demands. As such it requires hard work and resilience, delivers personal and professional growth and, of course, celebrates the LWOW community of change agents. • A huge thank you to Pinsent Masons, Spotify, and White & Case, for already committing to sponsoring two Sprint teams each. There are only 8 team sponsorships left so please reach out— fast—if your organization is interested.
  • LWOW Xed: All-virtual course for the LWOW Community and LWOW Students about innovation in law consisting of two parts:
    • Part A) live weekly 90-minute webinars featuring academics and thought leaders from around the world to explore the application of innovation and tech in the law with a global perspective. This part of the course is open to the entire LWOW community and provides great preparation for Sprint participants; and
    • Part B): virtual teaming among the student participants to solve a real challenge related to social justice/entrepreneurship. For more details click here. Wednesdays 22 Jan–8 April 2020.
